- 013Cross-sectional momentum
Price momentum
At each formation date, rank stocks by a completed historical return window. Buy relative winners and short relative losers. A common 12–1 implementation skips the most recent month to reduce short-term reversal effects.
- 014Cross-sectional momentum
Earnings momentum
Post-earnings-announcement drift (PEAD) asks whether prices keep moving in the direction of an earnings surprise after the report. A common approach ranks standardised surprises, buys positive-surprise firms and shorts negative-surprise firms after the information is public.
- 015Value
Value
Book-to-price divides book equity by market value. At each rebalance, the strategy buys higher-ratio stocks and sells lower-ratio stocks to test a relative-value spread.
- 016Factors & multi-factor investing
Low-volatility anomaly
Low-volatility investing estimates recent total volatility or market beta and favours lower-risk securities. A long-low/short-high BAB portfolio is a distinct, often risk-scaled implementation.
- 017Factors & multi-factor investing
Implied volatility signal
Measure monthly changes in call and put implied volatility at a consistent 30-day, at-the-money definition; rank stocks and compare their later returns.
- 018Factors & multi-factor investing
Multifactor portfolio/alpha combo
A multifactor portfolio combines value, momentum, quality, low-risk or other defined signals. It may weight factor portfolios or first combine stock-level scores.
- 019Statistical arbitrage & pairs
Pairs trading/relative-value mean reversion
Pairs trading selects economically or statistically linked assets, estimates a hedged spread and trades a pre-defined deviation with explicit exit rules.
- 020Trend & time-series momentum
Moving-average crossover
Moving averages smooth past prices. A short average above a long average may signal long exposure; below it may signal short or flat. Signals lag and can whipsaw in ranges.
- 021Trend & time-series momentum
Support and resistance
Classic pivot levels use the prior session’s high, low and close to estimate a centre P and first resistance/support. A rule may follow price above/below P or test reversals at R/S.
- 022Trend & time-series momentum
Channel/Donchian
A Donchian upper/lower band is the highest/lowest price over the prior T periods. A touch can be faded, or a close outside the range can signal a trend breakout.
- 023Event-driven & special situations
Merger arbitrage
After a public deal announcement, an arbitrageur buys the target. A cash deal pays cash if completed; a stock deal may short the acquirer at the exchange ratio. Delay and failure are central risks.
- 024Machine learning
Machine learning – single-stock KNN
Single-stock k-nearest-neighbour signal converts defined inputs into a rule or allocation. Its scenario illustrates the arithmetic, not validated excess returns.
